Strategic roadmap

During our project we have had numerous ways of presenting the situation of the poor in Cambodia: problems, stakeholders, needs, pre-conditions, means to get out of the vicious circle and many others have been drawn again and again into different forms of flowers, circles, tables and many mindmaps. It is nearly only a taste question which ones show situation best; each has its own viewpoint. Mutual to all is that these are supposed to be guidelines to ease the work of NGOs and other helping organizations, not necessarily straight guidelines for a poor Cambodian.

-Content of this roadmap
This text is about one of those, called at the moment "economic roadmap" (or "strategic roadmap"). It shows the pathway how different individuals can form communities for example in form of a school, neighborhood, religious group, occupation or other interest and later (or without the community step) their own enterprise to get surplus and thus achieve a better life for themselves, community and later maybe to their employees. This kind of new company can also become a social enterprise and start helping others. Community is an important step: the more people the more money they can collect to get a better loan and develop their business idea with many minds focused on it. On the way these individuals maybe get help from NGOs, social enterprises, private investors or municipalities in form of money, education, assistance, tools and so on. An important factor in all economy is the market: what sells and to whom. Innovations on this area bring prosperity and this way improvement to living conditions.

-Assessment
This presentation, however, is quite limited by having some information presented very precisely, but some information missing totally. It shows the concrete development but the vital thing, mindshift from a poor to an active entrepreneur, which allows this development, is not visible as a word inside table. The arrows can also be misleading if one is not familiar with the situation and table logic. This roadmap presentation also lacks the information about how to move from one stage to another. That information is shown in the Flexible framework, which so has a close connection to this table.

-Innovation
If it's this simple for an individual to get rid of poverty, why hasn't it already been done? The answer is mindset - of individuals and the whole nation. Whether it's because of buddhism mentality or individual attitudes, entrepreneurship is not too popular among the poor of Cambodia. NGOs can pour money to a country but it is worth of nothing if there is no mentality to develop the community further. What is needed is a feeling that one can change his life. After that important step there are plenty of organizations out there to help beginning entrepreneurs. In this step one big question is the amount of illiterature people with no language skills. How can you get fund if you cannot read where to get it from? Export of information and education is a vital mission in reducing poverty worldwide.
